CNG vs EV vs Petrol Which are The Most Economical Commuter Vehicles In India

Now that, Bajaj has brought in a new CNG bike, being hailed to be another most economical commuter segment addition in India one question seems to be the curiosity of all throughout the country: What would be more economical, an EV scooter or bike or the CNG bike Bjaj Freedom 125? What would be better. Since the prices of two-wheelers have showcased an increase in recent times it's only evident that consumers would want to spend their money with due care and attention.

To help and support all our customers in the same pursuit, we would help you make the right decision while buying a two-wheeler vehicle. In the race to be the most economical, EV vehicles are not that far behind either, with their nominal electric charge prices. After this blog, you will be able to make a clear decision as to which bike you should go for, whether an EV or the CNG-powered Freedom 125.

Charges of EV bikes

Ev scooter Ather 450x review

Here is a way through which you can calculate the charging costs of an EV two-wheeler.

  • Ascertain the capacity of the battery, such as the battery capacity of Ola S1 is around 2.9 to 3, kWH, Ather 450x has a battery capacity of 3.7kwh and the Bajaj Chetak Electric has a battery capacity of around 3.2 KWH.
  • To find out about the monetary charges that these vehicles would take while getting charged you would have to find out the per unit rate of electricity supply at your end.
  • For example if the per unit (KWH) charge is around 6 Rs the total charging of a electric vehicle would cost you around 18 Rs for OLA s1, 22.2 for Ather 450x and  19.2 Rs for Ather scooter.
  • A pretty negligible cost, but how often you would have to charge the vehicle based on your use would be a question to worry about as well.
  • To find out how you can easily take out this no, use your vehicle daily and find out how much use you can fit in before another charge.
  • This also depends upon your riding temperament as riding aggressively can lead to excessive battery drainage.
  • Ola S1 gives a range of about 190km, while the Ather 450x gives out a mileage of about 105 km and further the Chetak gives out a range of about 126 km.
  • When it comes to the mileage these scooters can provide after a full charge, there are a few factors that might affect the vehicle's performance.
  • Load on the vehicle, passenger load, load due to inclines along the way you travel, further the riding styles also impact the performance of the vehicle.
  • These would determine the frequency of the charges you would have to provide for while riding the vehicle

Freedom 125/ CNG Powered Bike

Freedom 125

  • A single-cylinder, four-stroke air-cooled Bajaj Freedom 125 engine produces about 9.5 ps of power @8000 RPM and a max torque figure of about 9.7Nm @5000 RPM. The bike has a CNG capacity of 2 kg.
  • Torque figures with CNG would be around 9.7nm @5000 rpm and top speed would reduce to 90.5 km/h.
  • So according to the shared figures the bike can run about 200km on CNG and about 130 km on Petrol.
  • 200 km on two kilos worth of CNG, so about 100 km’s on a single kilo of CNG. The charges of getting the bike to do 100 km on a single kilo of CNG would vary around but in our city is around 87.57.
  • A hundred km in 87.57 is a good deal, provided the bike actually manages to do 100 km on a single kilo of CNG. These are figures provided by the company under ARAI conditions; hence, the real figures will only be out once the vehicle is in the market.

Final Note

While EV vehicles might seem like the clear winner in the comparison, they suffer from a few issues as well. The first one is maintenance; every vehicle undergoes a gradual development in the market, and as customers pinpoint issues, the manufacturers take care of them in the incoming launces or try and manage a product recall. Consider the EV vehicles available in the market to be the first-generation descendants, and hence, they do have their fair share of issues.

RenTrip comparison of ev ,petrol and CNG commuter vehicles

There have been multiple reports of the Ola S1 suffering from front suspension collapse, reverse rotation of the motor in the rear wheel, etc. And certain instances have also come forward where in customer support has been pretty negligible. Ev’s are a newer breed of vehicles, and to have enough no of trained maintenance workers present on a pan-India basis is a big task; most manufacturers are in the process of maintaining such a presence. The CNG-powered bike, Freedom 125, is on the same page as well, but the huge dealer and service network of Bajaj would come in handy for maintenance.
