In the olden days, Jaisalmer used to span from modern-day Afghanistan to Sialkot to modern-day Bhatinda and Hanumangarh. But under the rule of Bhati, it witnessed several attacks from central Asia and hence, over time, shrunk to the size that we are aware of now.  As per the records its evident that the Hindu Shahis who resided predominantly in Afganistan wanted to end slavery hence they joined hands with Bhati’s but their alliance ended after a defeat from Alp Tigin in the year 997CE.

With time, the Bhati dominions shifted downwards towards the south as they ruled Multan. Over the years, they finally got pushed to reside in Cholistan and Jaisalmer. It was here that Raawal Devaraja built Dera Rawal. Jaisalmer became the first capital of the Rawals, known as Rawal Jaiswal.

In the year 1818, Jaisalmer became a British protectorate in the Rajputana kingdom. At that time, the economy of Jaisalmer struggled, and hence, Ranjit Sigh and  Bairi Sal Singh took resolute actions to turn the city around and develop further. But the drought, as well as the loss of livestock, led to further decline. It was only after the British left that, in the year 1947, Jawahir Singh signed a treaty, an instrument of accession to the government of India, while retaining a little autonomy until the year 1950.
